Scholar of Religion
I'm a scholar of religion who teaches in the Department of Philosophy and Religion at Western Kentucky University. I have published three books and am working on my fourth. My current project examines the power of mysticism in the modern world, in particular the ways that Hinduism, Buddhism, and Islam are adopted, re-articulated, and commodified by North Americans, both through material objects and in therapeutic practices including mystical tourism. Titled Buying Buddha, Selling Rumi: Mysticism in the Modern World, it will be published by Oneworld in 2019. I have another book (what will be my fifth) under contract with Oxford University Press titled The Mosque with the Thatched Roof, on material religion, gender, and ritual in Indonesia. See below for some preview images of this book!
My areas of expertise are Islamophobia, pilgrimage in Islam, comparative religion, material religion, gender, theory and methods in the study of religion, and Muslim super heroines.
